Anyone who has already read up on bougainvilleas knows that they are not hardy. After all, they also come from southern regions. Below you will find out when the climbing beauties need to be brought into the house at the latest.
When should you bring bougainvillea indoors?
Bougainvilleas should be brought into the winter quarters before the first night frosts, i.e. when temperatures are below 0°C. During the fall, keep an eye on the weather forecast to find the right time.
Please no frost
According to their subtropical, South American homeland, bougainvilleas are incredibly light and heat-loving. They are not familiar with temperatures below 0°C. That's why their structure is not immune to frost. If they are exposed to more severe low temperatures, they protest accordingly by quickly shedding their leaves. They usually survive one or two nights at just below 0°C, but longer periods of frost can mean their death.
So the basic rules are:
- Bougainvilleas are not frost hardy
- protect from temperatures below 0°C
- possible death after prolonged exposure to frost
To start wintering, follow the weather forecast
So the timing of when you should overwinter your bougainvillea is a bit sensitive. It's best to pay close attention to the weather reports in autumn to avoid unnecessary frost damage. In the wintering quarters, the bougainvillea can also be kept cool (5-15°C).
