Despite various problems, the evergreen boxwood (Buxus sempervirens and other species) is one of the most popular trees in the garden. This popularity is not surprising, as the plant is considered easy to care for, versatile and extremely easy to cut. In order to enjoy your Buchs for a long time, you should provide it with sufficient and regular water - its needs are higher than generally assumed.

How should you water a boxwood properly?

Boxwood should be watered regularly and sufficiently, especially for freshly planted specimens and during hot and dry phases. Water from below, avoid cold or too hard tap water and it is best to water early in the morning.

Water the boxwood properly in the garden

A box planted in the garden does not generally need to be watered regularly, but it does need to be watered on special occasions. Freshly planted specimens have a particularly high water requirement; they should be intensively immersed with the root ball in a bucket of water immediately before planting and also have a significantly higher requirement in the first two weeks after planting. Water the plant evenly, i.e. H. Don't just pour the water in one place, but all around. This allows the rootstock and thus also the above-ground parts of the plant to develop evenly. Furthermore, boxwood should be watered during hot and/or dry phases so that it does not suffer from thirst. Please note these instructions:

  • Water only from below, never over the leaves.
  • Do not water with cold tap water!
  • Calciferous tap water is fine, but should be warmed up.
  • If possible, water early in the morning, but never at lunchtime.

Tips for optimal watering of a container plant

Box needs a comparatively high amount of moisture, but it cannot tolerate excessively wet feet and certainly not waterlogging. So keep the substrate slightly moist but not wet and ensure good drainage in the pot so that excess water can escape and be drained. Boxwood should also be watered moderately during the winter months as new roots form at this time.

Tip

Since boxwood also needs a lot of nutrients, you should also fertilize it regularly.
