Admittedly, the constant relocation of a plant is quite tedious. Would you prefer to leave your acacia tree on the terrace all year round? Better not, because the deciduous tree is sensitive to frost. You can find out how best to overwinter it and what winter-hardy alternatives there are in the following article.

Are acacias hardy and frost-resistant?

Are acacias hardy? Most types of acacia are sensitive to frost and need to be protected in winter. An exception is the ball acacia, which is winter-hardy when planted in the ground. However, potted plants must also be brought indoors in winter.

Are acacias hardy?

Acacias impress with their southern flair. The deciduous tree comes from Africa, Australia or, more rarely, the United States. There they are used to the warm climate, which is why the only disadvantage of the exotic trees is that they cannot tolerate frost. For this reason, it is necessary to protect your acacia tree from sub-zero temperatures.

Overwintering the acacia tree

There are two different location options available for overwintering the acacia:

  • a cool, dark place with temperatures of 0-5°C
  • or a bright, sunny place with temperatures of 10-15°C

In both cases, the air should not be too dry (no heating air). Ideally the humidity is at least 50%. Greenhouses and winter gardens are ideal for this. You should also

  • keep the root ball moist at all times
  • do not give fertilizer during winter

Tip

Keeping it in a container makes it easier to change location when the first frost hits. If you still want to give the impression that your acacia has been planted in the ground, dig a hole and place the pot in it. Then fill the hole with soil. In late autumn, simply dig up the bucket again.

The ball acacia is the exception

The ball acacia is a variety with a round habit. Unlike the other acacia varieties, it is winter-hardy. However, this property only applies to trees that are planted in the ground. Cultivated as a pot plant, you also have to bring the ball acacia indoors in winter to protect it from frost.
