Do you already own a golden elm and would like to expand your inventory with another specimen? Before you have to travel long distances to the nearest tree nursery and pay dearly for the new tree, you can grow another golden elm yourself using the following instructions.
How to propagate a golden elm?
To propagate a golden elm, you can either use grafts or cuttings. With the offshoot method, you carefully dig up young shoots with their own roots near the trunk and plant them elsewhere in the garden. Be careful not to damage the roots.
Various ways of propagation
There are two different options for propagating the golden elm, both of which have advantages and disadvantages:
- the refinement
- propagation through offshoots
The refinement
Propagation of a plant through grafting is a very complex process for which you must have professional knowledge. In most cases, only trained traders use this technique. You can purchase small cuttings that have already been grafted at the tree nursery.
Propagation through offshoots
Nevertheless, it is worth making your own attempt and growing a golden elm from its offshoots. Unfortunately, this method does not always work. Fortunately, the deciduous tree tends to form very strong runners. You can increase this tendency by cutting back your golden elm vigorously. The tree tries to compensate for the loss that the tree suffers on the surface of the earth by spreading underground. Please note, however, that encouraging runners can have undesirable consequences. The new shoots often come to light in beds or under stone slabs, precisely where they destroy painstakingly created garden sections. This is how you proceed with the propagation of the golden elm through cuttings:
- look for young shoots near the trunk of the original tree and carefully dig them up
- be careful not to damage the roots. This would further increase the formation of foothills
- The runners must have already formed enough of their own roots for propagation to be successful
- immediately plant the removed runner in another part of the garden
- water the young golden elm well, including in the next few days
