If you would like to have a new hazelnut bush but are afraid of the purchase costs, you can take action yourself. The hazelnut is easy to propagate using cuttings. But how exactly does it work?
How do you propagate hazelnuts with cuttings?
Hazelnut propagation by cuttings can be done in three steps: 1. In autumn, cut off a 10-20 cm long branch and remove the lowest leaves. 2. Place the branch in potting soil and keep it moist. 3. In the spring, after the ice saints, plant the rooted cutting in its final location.
Step number 1: Cut and trim a branch
Whether it's a wild hazelnut or one from your garden - you should wait until autumn to propagate it from cuttings. After the harvest or the fruit has fallen, a strong branch from a he althy mother plant can be cut off.
The branch later forms the basis of the plant. It should be between 10 and 20 cm long. Remove the lowest leaves. If you already have a hazelnut bush, you can combine the procedure with annual pruning.
Step number 2: Stick the branch into the ground
After cutting, the branch is placed in suitable soil (€6.00 on Amazon) such as potting soil. 1/3 of the branch should be in the ground. Pots can be used or the branch can be placed directly outdoors in a protected, bright and not full sun location. It is then watered and kept moist for the rest of the time.
Step number 3: Plant the cutting
After a few weeks, the branch has developed its first roots - usually not visible. However, you should wait until spring until it reaches its final location. The first buds can usually be seen in spring.
Then the following points should be taken into account:
- plant the cutting in loose soil
- best time: after the Ice Saints in May
- water regularly at first
- remove more competitive (weeds) in the immediate vicinity in the first few weeks
