Many perennials or flowering shrubs are planted solely because of their lush and/or colorful flowers, but this is probably not the case with the ginkgo, because it blooms quite inconspicuously in green. His strength lies elsewhere.

When is the flowering time of the ginkgo tree?

The flowering period of the ginkgo tree extends from March to April, with male trees bearing catkins and female trees developing single, long-stemmed green flowers. Female trees later bear fruit that smells of butyric acid.

The ginkgo has a special feature: there are purely male and purely female trees, as well as poplars and willows. Both sexes bear green flowers from March to April, which grow in the form of catkins on male trees, but are single and long-stemmed on female trees. Only the female trees bear fruit later.

The most important things in brief:

  • separate gender
  • sexually mature very late (between 20 and 35 years old)
  • male flowers: in catkins
  • female flowers: solitary, long-stemmed
  • Flowering time: March to April
  • Flower color: green
  • Fruits only on female trees

Tip

Since the ripe fruits smell quite unpleasant of butyric acid, you should not plant female trees where you would like to during the ripening period.
