Walnut trees can be easily grown through seedling propagation. Cut fresh shoots from the walnut tree, plant them in nutrient-rich potting soil, keep the soil moist and place the planter in a bright, frost-free location. If successful, the seedlings will soon form new leaves.
Walnut seedling propagation – this is how it works
Compared to propagation via walnut fruits, the method with seedlings is quicker and easier to implement and is often more successful. It doesn't take any magic to grow new walnut trees using seedling propagation.
Here are the step-by-step instructions:
- Take a sufficiently large planter.
- Fill the bucket with high-quality, nutrient-rich potting soil (€6.00 on Amazon).
- Cut off several fresh shoots at least 15 centimeters long from your current walnut tree. It doesn't matter if the shoots are still green or already show slight woodiness.
- Place the seedlings in the prepared planter.
- Then water the soil vigorously.
- Place the pot in a bright, well-protected and frost-free location.
- Keep the soil constantly moist.
- You can easily check whether the propagation is working: If new leaves form soon, then the respective seedling is successful. Otherwise it is a shoot that is not suitable for reproduction.
- Once the seedlings have sprouted, you should give each growing walnut tree its own container.
- Put the pots with the walnut trees outside in summer. They want a sunny location there. Continue to make sure that the soil does not dry out. So you need to water the seedlings regularly.
- Towards winter you should place the young trees in a frost-proof place. Always remember that the thriving plants are not yet sufficiently hardy - this takes at least two years.

- Walnut trees are generally sensitive to frost and can freeze easily. This is especially true for young trees. That's why you should never transplant your seedlings into the garden prematurely.
- In principle, it is important to only propagate a walnut tree if you have enough space in the garden. Otherwise, you can still try a bonsai pose. However, this experiment fails in many cases.
