There are numerous home remedies that are recommended for removing moss from lawns, walls or paved surfaces and for preventing moss growth. Some work well, others less so, some can even cause harm.
Which home remedies can you use to remove moss?
Various home remedies such as s alt, vinegar, soda, soft soap and cola help to remove moss, although they should be used in an environmentally friendly manner. Scarifying is recommended for lawns, water and a scrubber are sufficient on concrete surfaces, while garden furniture can be cleaned with vinegar or soft soap.
Which home remedies really help against moss?
Numerous products are recommended to remove moss from lawns or paved surfaces. Green garden furniture can also be cleaned easily with the help of home remedies. However, not every agent is suitable for every area of application.
Home remedies for the lawn
You should not use any products that can act like weed killers on the lawn. These would attack the desired plants just as much as unwanted moss or clover. The least harmful measure is to scarify your lawn in spring.
Applying sulphate of ammonia also has a good effect. However, it should only be used when the soil is neutral or slightly alkaline as it makes the soil slightly more acidic. Vinegar, s alt and soda should not be used on the lawn at all. They not only destroy the moss but also the lawn grass.
Home remedies for paved surfaces
You can remove moss from paving slabs made of concrete or natural stone with clear water and a scrubber. The moss may also be removed by scraping (for example with a spade or shovel). It should be slightly damp, which makes the work much easier. Particularly suitable times are shortly after a downpour or before the morning dew has dried.
Pour boiling water into the joints of your patio or sidewalk slabs before scraping them out. This makes moss, grass and other plants easier to remove and doesn't grow back as quickly. You can also use undiluted cola on smaller areas. Its phosphoric acid is very effective against moss and also prevents re-infestation.
A wooden terrace, like concrete slabs or walls, can be removed from moss with a high-pressure cleaner (€105.00 on Amazon). However, this measure can change the wood structure so that moss can then grow more quickly.
Cleaning garden furniture
Moss usually doesn't grow on garden furniture, but a greenish coating often forms, popularly incorrectly called verdigris. This can be removed with vinegar, soda or soft soap. Then rinse your garden furniture with clean water.
