After the long winter, we're really looking forward to enjoying the first rays of sunshine on the balcony. It's all the more devastating when dirty green moss spreads in stone joints, on slabs or wooden floorboards. Read here how you can clean moss from your balcony using home remedies.
How to remove moss from the balcony effectively and in an environmentally friendly way?
To remove moss from the balcony, you can use soda or vinegar. For soda: dissolve in warm water and spread on moss, leave to act and scrub off. For vinegar: Apply vinegar solution to moss using a hand sprayer, let it take effect and scrub smooth surfaces the next day.
This is how soda cleans the mossy balcony
For generations, housewives have sworn by the many benefits of soda. If the classic is on the pantry shelf, additional cleaning products are usually unnecessary. Not only does the laundry become spotlessly clean, the balcony also shines sparkling clean and free of moss. This is how it works:
- Buy pure soda or washing soda at the drugstore
- Dissolve the agent in warm water according to the manufacturer's dosage instructions
- Roughly scrape off the existing moss from paving stones, stone slabs or wooden floorboards with a spatula
- Sprinkle the soda water over it
- Let it work and scrub off
Although soda and baking soda are often mentioned in the same breath, there is still an important difference. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, while the chemical name for soda is sodium carbonate. Anyone who knows anything about the secrets of chemistry knows that soda has a much more intensive effect than cleaning agents. Baking soda, on the other hand, is useful as a baking ingredient or when you feel unwell.
With vinegar, moss gives in – this is how it works
Just as safely as vinegar removes mold, limescale and dirt in the household, the product removes moss on the balcony. The only requirement is that the surface is not made of natural stone. Here vinegar would cause undesirable side effects, such as stains or porous joints. You can either use wine vinegar or dissolve vinegar essence with water in a ratio of 2:1. A few drops of lavender or eucalyptus oil provide a pleasant scent.
The vinegar solution is poured into a hand sprayer and sprayed onto the mossy areas. The next day you can scrub off the dead moss. The effect is enhanced if you manually remove loose moss pads before using vinegar.
Tip
Used in the lawn, iron fertilizer destroys the moss, at least in the short term. However, the product is unsuitable for removing moss from the balcony, terrace or paved paths. The poisonous iron II sulfate it contains causes ugly stains on the floor.
