Moss grows almost everywhere in the garden, on the lawn as well as in the flowerbed, as long as it is moist enough there. There are various ways to remove unwanted moss, but you can also use it to decorate.
How do you design a moss terrarium in a glass?
Moss in a glass can easily be designed as a decorative mini terrarium. Using a clean mason jar with a screw lid, add moist soil and moss from the garden and combine with small plants, pebbles or pieces of wood. Protected moss and animals should not be used.
Mini landscape with moss
You can create a pretty mini terrarium with just a few inexpensive, often even free items. You determine the size of this terrarium by choosing the glass. However, it should not be too small and should have a screw lid. Preserving jars, for example, are well suited. You can get soil and moss from the garden. Only collecting non-protected species is permitted in the forest.
Wash the mason jar thoroughly and/or rinse it with hot water. Then pile some moist soil onto the screw lid and place the moss and perhaps other small plants on top. Wood sorrel can be combined well with moss because both like slightly acidic soil.
You can also just decorate with moss along with a few pretty pebbles or specially shaped pieces of wood. Animals do not belong in this type of terrarium, not even beetles or insects, because the glass is now screwed onto the lid and there is practically no air exchange until the next time the glass is opened.
The most important things in brief:
- do not collect protected moss in the forest
- do not put animals in a closed jar
- Slightly moisten the soil
Small terrarium in a glass
As an alternative to the (closed) preserving jar, open-topped glass containers can also be decorated decoratively. In addition to moss, you can also use other plants for decoration. Succulents, grasses or bonsai are ideal for this. However, you should adjust the substrate and water supply to the plants you choose.
Tip
If you have a particularly decorative type of moss in your garden, then use it as decoration instead of destroying it. A mini terrarium also makes a good gift for plant lovers.
