Not everyone has a eucalyptus in their garden. Although pruning requires some maintenance due to the rapid growth, planting is definitely worth it. After all, the tree with its intense scent proves to be a mosquito repellent, among other things. Added to this is its beautiful appearance. With these tips, your eucalyptus will thrive in the garden.
How to properly plant a eucalyptus in the garden?
To plant a eucalyptus in the garden, choose a location in full sun, dig a hole, add compost, place the plant in it and water it sufficiently. Note the rapid growth, possible toxicity and competition with other plants.
Planting eucalyptus in the garden
- Choose a suitable location (see below).
- Dig a hole.
- Work a layer of compost into the soil.
- Put the eucalyptus in the hole.
- Fill the hole with soil and tamp it down well.
- Water the substrate.
What should you pay attention to?
Three things could make you decide against having eucalyptus in your garden:
- Fast growth, regular pruning is essential.
- Many parts of the plant are slightly poisonous.
- Other plants in the vicinity of the eucalyptus may die.
Location
The eucalyptus also needs a location in full sun. The deciduous tree does not do well in shady gardens. In any case, it will not reveal its impressive appearance here. As long as the soil provides sufficient nutrients, the eucalyptus does not place any special demands on the substrate. However, there should be no waterlogging. The soil should therefore be well-drained. To promote growth, it is recommended to support the tree every two weeks in summer with liquid fertilizer (€10.00 on Amazon).
Winter protection
Unfortunately, apart from the Eucalyptus gunii, the deciduous tree is not hardy. Only large trees over five meters that, with the best will in the world, can no longer be moved indoors are allowed to overwinter outside. Nevertheless, you should protect the roots from frost with a layer of mulch. Keeping them in a bucket is therefore worth considering. While the tree enjoys sunbathing on the terrace in summer, it hibernates indoors when it is cold.
