Growing eucalyptus from seeds
To grow a eucalyptus yourself, you will of course need seeds (€3.00 on Amazon). You can get these at the tree nursery or online. If you already have a eucalyptus at home, it is a good idea to take the necessary seeds from the existing plant. Then you can get started:
- You can grow a eucalyptus all year round.
- First you need to stratify the seeds to increase germination.
- Store the seeds in the refrigerator for a week.
- Prepare a seed pot with soil.
- Place the seeds on the surface and press them lightly. (The eucalyptus is a light germinator).
- Place the growing pot in a sunny place, for example on the windowsill.
- There should be high humidity here.
- Water the soil regularly, but make sure that no waterlogging forms.
- If necessary, install drainage on the pot.
- The germination time is about three months.
Sowing eucalyptus - location
If the new shoots are sufficiently long (around 10-15 cm), it is time to transplant the young eucalyptus. Whether you decide to grow it in a container as a houseplant or plant it outdoors is entirely up to you. In both cases, it is important that your eucalyptus continues to be sunny. If you put the tree outside, you should take into account that it needs winter protection in its first few years. The plant also cannot tolerate drafts. It is best to replant your eucalyptus in spring.
Substrate
The eucalyptus does not place any great demands on the soil. It copes well with drought. Always wait until the substrate has dried before giving water. To place the eucalyptus in the ground, dig a sufficiently large hole, loosen the surrounding soil and enrich it with some compost. After planting the tree, press the soil firmly and water it immediately after planting.
Note: Eucalypts that are grown independently from seeds unfortunately do not produce flowers.
