The Hanau Garden Festival: Meeting point for plant lovers
When two herb women discovered a forest spring in 1709, they could not have imagined that the fountain built at this location would one day form the center of one of the most beautiful landscape parks in Hesse. In 1777, Hereditary Prince Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel commissioned the construction of an extensive complex here for guests. The landscape garden, in which various attractions such as a historic carousel and an artificially created ruin are embedded, is still an inviting place to stroll and offers peace and relaxation.
It forms the romantic backdrop for the Hanau Garden Festival, which takes place every year in June. Over 200 exhibitors offer exquisite goods and handicrafts in small pagoda tents covering an area of more than 20,000 square meters. In addition to plants, perennials, garden furniture and interiors, you can discover art objects and accessories that make your home and garden more beautiful. A depot service conveniently transports your purchased treasures to the collection point in the parking lot, while you can stroll past the various stands and enjoy the supporting program. Take a look at the traditional doll museum, the romantic castle ruins or have fun with a ride on the historic carousel, which is unique in Europe. Of course, your physical well-being is also well taken care of.
Tip
Not far from the Wilhelmsbad Landscape Park is Philippsruhe Castle, also surrounded by an extremely attractive landscape park with old trees. The focal point is a fountain, which offers a wonderful view of the castle. There is an amphitheater in the park, which is, among other things, the venue for the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Festival. Garden lovers should not miss visiting this park, which was completely renovated in 2002.
