Adding iron fertilizer is important in every aquarium, especially if you keep root feeders in it. You can produce such fertilizer yourself using relatively simple means. The instructions can be found in this post.
How can you make your own fertilizer for aquatic plants?
To make fertilizer for aquatic plants yourself, you need red clay, blue grain (NPK fertilizer) and, if necessary, Fetrilon 13% (iron fertilizer). Form clay balls, fill them with Blaukorn and Fetrilon, bake them at 150 ° C for 30 minutes and then attach them to the roots of the plants in the aquarium bottom.
Make your own fertilizer balls – step by step
Ingredients:
- red clay (naturally contains a lot of iron; available in craft stores or potters)
- Blue grain (NPK fertilizer – fertilizer with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium)
- a sachet of Fetrilon 13% (Fetrilon is iron fertilizer; only if necessary)
How to proceed:
- Form small balls out of the clay.
- Make a hollow in each ball.
- Fill each cavity with two to three grains of blue grain (€34.00 on Amazon) and - if necessary - a small pinch of Fetrilon.
- Now shape each ball into a well-sealed whole.
- Put the balls in the oven at 150 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes. This step will dry the fertilizer balls.
- Let the balls cool.
Application: Depending on the ball and plant size, you should place one or two fertilizer balls on the roots in the aquarium floor.
Important: Each aquarium has an individual iron consumption. Measure the water values regularly (with iron tests from specialist retailers) in order to apply appropriate fertilization.
