Creeping plants and tall grasses that cling to the fence and tall grasses that look unkempt. Even if wild herbs are allowed to grow as they please in your own garden, an overgrown property border is not a pretty sight. In this article you will find out how to combat unwanted greenery on the fence and keep the fence weed-free.
How to effectively remove weeds from the fence?
To remove weeds from the fence, cut back weeds, pull out roots, mow down creepers and remove root parts. A layer of mulch made from bark mulch or grass clippings serves as a barrier. If there are weeds from the neighboring property, lay rhizome barriers.
First remove wild growth mechanically
If weeds have already established themselves, you should cut them back and then pull out the roots. If possible, dig up the soil under the fence with a digging fork so that the root system can be easily picked out. It is worthwhile to be very careful when doing this work, as many weed plants grow back from the smallest root residues.
Creeping plants in the fence
The above measures also help against winds that are otherwise difficult to combat. However, if these creeping plants have settled in your area, consistency is necessary. After regularly mowing at ground level, you should pull as long root sections as possible out of the ground. This weakens the plants so much over time that the morning glories no longer have enough energy for new growth.
Mulching under the fence
Wild herb seeds need light to germinate. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of effort to lay weed control fabric under the fence. However, a not too thin layer of mulch made from plant material serves the same purpose. When spreading, proceed as follows:
- First weed the weeds.
- Loosen the soil a little and pull out any remaining roots.
- Spread bark mulch or grass clippings about 5 centimeters thick.
The weeds are growing into my fence from the neighboring property. What to do?
Your neighbor has the freedom to design his garden the way he wants. However, with simple measures you can prevent root weeds from growing under the enclosure into your garden.
- Lay polyethylene rhizome barriers along the fence so that weeds cannot penetrate them.
- Insert the barrier at a slight angle as this will guide the roots upwards.
Tip
The most important thing if you want to keep the property line permanently free of weeds: Never leave weeds standing for too long and be sure to remove them before they go to seed. The use of a lawn edger (€44.00 on Amazon) has proven useful for this purpose. For very long fences, you can alternatively use a brush cutter.
