Aloe vera is also called desert lily. Although their flowers have little resemblance to lily flowers, they are certainly an impressive appearance with their tall, upright, straight inflorescences in bright red, orange or yellow.
When and how does aloe vera bloom?
Aloe vera blooms once a year from the age of 3, usually in spring, with upright, candle-like inflorescences of yellow, red or orange, tubular flowers. Cool wintering at 10°-15° Celsius promotes flowering.
Aloe vera is grown all over the world primarily for its leaves. Juice and gel are obtained from the leaves for the cosmetics and food industries. Aloe vera is popular as a houseplant for many reasons:
- it tolerates the dry heating air,
- she needs little water,
- its leaves can help with skin injuries and diseases as well as sunburn.
When and how does aloe vera bloom?
When aloe vera plants reach sexual maturity, they develop an inflorescence in spring that quickly grows upright and eventually branches. At the end of the inflorescence a cluster of flower heads forms. Tubular yellow, red or orange flowers develop from this. You can observe how the flowers wither at the bottom of the cluster, while they are still blooming in the middle and can be seen as buds at the top.
How to make aloe vera bloom?
Aloe vera blooms once a year from around the age of 3. Cool overwintering promotes flowering. A bright room with temperatures of around 10°-15° Celsius is ideal. During this time there is no fertilization and very little watering.
Tip
If your aloe dies after flowering, you apparently mistook an agave for aloe. The two plants look similar. However, the agave only flowers once and then dies.
