There is a completely natural remedy against fungus gnats: cold. If there is high humidity and a lot of heat in your rooms, the pests multiply rapidly. However, if the exact opposite occurs, namely cold and dryness, the animals disappear in no time. Here you can find out everything about “cold therapy” for fungus gnats.
How do you fight fungus gnats with cold?
Sad gnats can be controlled by cold and dry conditions. Affected, frost-resistant plants should be left outside overnight in winter and the plant soil should be covered with dry sand to prevent moisture. In the greenhouse, regular ventilation and dividing plantings are recommended.
Cold and dryness to combat fungus gnats
Two measures are particularly worthwhile if your plant suffers from a fungus gnat infestation:
- Put the plant outside
- Prevent moisture
Put the plant outside
This treatment does not involve any chemical agents, nor do you have to use a home remedy. Just trust nature and put your affected plant outside overnight in winter. The cold doesn't suit the pests at all and they quickly run away.
Note: Of course, this method of combating fungus gnats is only recommended if your plant is frost-resistant.
Prevent moisture
In warm rooms there is usually high humidity. If your plant soil is also moist, fungus gnats will find an optimal breeding place here. Prevent access to wet soil by adding a layer of dry sand to the substrate. No position should be left vacant. You should also avoid stuffy heating air in the apartment.
Combat in the greenhouse
Unfortunately, a greenhouse is characterized by high humidity and a humid climate. On the one hand, these conditions help many plants to grow better, but on the other hand, they also promote the infestation of fungus gnats. There are also two ways to regulate the air conditions:
- Air regularly
- Dividing plantings
Air regularly
Avoid excessive humidity by tilting the windows of your greenhouse once a day. A sufficient planting distance also ensures sufficient air circulation.
Dividing plantings
There are also plants in the greenhouse that like it more or less sunny. Group your plants according to their location preferences so that you can contain widespread infestation.
