The egg tree (bot. Solanum melongena) grows relatively quickly, so it makes sense to grow a plant yourself from seeds. This isn't too difficult, but it does require a little patience and care because the young plants are quite sensitive.

How do I grow egg tree seeds?

To grow egg tree seeds successfully, you should pre-soak the seeds in lukewarm water, sow them on growing substrate, ensure uniform heat and moisture and keep them at a germination temperature of around 20 °C to 25 °C. The germination period is approx. 14 to 20 days.

Where can I get good seeds?

In seed and garden shops (€2.00 on Amazon) you can get a selection of Solanum melongena, including plants with the well-known dark purple eggplants as well as other variants. They all belong to the nightshade family, so they are related to potatoes and tomatoes. All fruits are edible, but some only when heated. Young eggplants or unripe fruits contain unhe althy components such as solanine and bitter substances.

How do I treat the seeds?

The propagation of the egg tree absolutely requires sufficient warmth and moisture. It's best to let the seeds soak in lukewarm water for about 24 hours, which makes germination easier. Then sprinkle the seeds on growing substrate, moisten the seeds and cover them with a thin layer of substrate.

How long does germination take?

Ensure consistent air and soil moisture during germination. To do this, you can cover the growing pot with a transparent film. The temperatures should be as constant as possible between 20 °C and 25 °C.

The first seedlings will appear after about 14 to 20 days. They are still quite sensitive, but need daily ventilation if they are kept under foil. However, you should wait about five to eight weeks before pricking out. The young plants are only allowed outside after the Ice Saints, they are not hardy.

The most important things in brief:

  • Sowing possible from January to October
  • sow on the windowsill or in the greenhouse
  • Soak seeds in lukewarm water
  • sow about 0.5 to 1 cm deep
  • place in a warm and bright place
  • keep evenly moist
  • Germination temperature: about 20 °C to 25 °C
  • Germination time: approx. 14 to 20 days
  • Prick out after about 5 to 8 weeks

Tip

You don't necessarily need a greenhouse to germinate eggplant seeds. But be sure to ensure even heat and humidity.
