How can I germinate grains?

To germinate grains, you need a germination jar, seeds and water. Wash the grains, let them soak for 2-12 hours, change the water regularly and let them germinate for 1-4 days at 18-20°C. You can then harvest and use the sprouted grain.

Instructions

Material

Germinating grains is not difficult at all. You also need very little material:

  • a germination jar with a draining device in the lid
  • a kitchen strainer
  • Grains of any type of cereal

Procedure

The germination process is divided into three parts:

  • Soak seeds (2-12 hours depending on the type of grain)
  • Germination phase at 18-20°C (1-4 days depending on the desired consistency)
  • Rinse (twice a day, more often in summer)

Procedure

  1. Wash seeds in a bowl of water.
  2. Let the seeds stand in the water for some time until the dirt particles float to the surface.
  3. Scoop off dirt particles.
  4. Pour water.
  5. Sifting grain.
  6. Sort out damaged grains.
  7. Fill seeds into the germination jar.
  8. Fill up with three times the amount of water.
  9. Close the jar tightly.
  10. Store the germination jar in a dark place (alternatively cover with a towel).
  11. Let it soak for 8 to 12 hours, depending on the type of grain.
  12. Swirl the glass so that dirt particles separate from the grain.
  13. Pour out the water.
  14. Repeat the process if the water is still dirty.
  15. Pour in four times the amount of water again.
  16. Change water daily.
  17. After a few days, drain completely and let the seeds germinate dry.
  18. Rinse one last time after 1 to four days (depending on the desired size).
  19. harvest germinated grain

Usage

  • in muesli
  • in the smoothie
  • on bread
  • in salad

Storage and durability

Normally, grains last forever if you keep them tightly closed in a place protected from light. However, since germinated seeds have come into contact with water, their shelf life is shortened to a few days. It is best to store the grains in the refrigerator. You can safely eat it for four days.
