Albuca Spiralis comes from South Africa, where it grows in winter and goes dormant in summer. Its spirally twisted leaves give it an unusual appearance and that's what brought it to us. But what rhythm does the onion plant follow in this country and how cold can it get in winter?
How should you overwinter the Albuca spiralis in winter?
Albuca Spiralis should ideally be overwintered at 10-15°C and away from frost. A bright place is recommended, with occasional watering being sufficient. Colder temperatures down to 0°C are tolerable, but not optimal.
Can overwinter at room temperature
Since Albuca Spiralis is not hardy, it cannot be left in frost for a single day. In our latitudes, the outdoor stay is therefore limited to the summer. Many dealers recommend overwintering the pot indoors. The plant can be left at room temperature, but must be placed in a bright place. Their owner should be able to do both easily.
It's better to keep it cooler
Even if it survives room temperature, Albuca spiralis prefers it to be a little cooler during its winter break. Anyone who can offer her such a place should do so.
- overwinter between 10 and 15 °C
- lower temperatures down to 0 °C are also possible
The cool dormant period is intended to encourage Albuca Spiralis to bloom more beautifully. Care is limited to occasional watering.
Tip
The sunnier you place the plant during the growing season, the curlier the new growth will be.
