How do I plant freesias correctly?
Freesias are best planted after the Ice Saints in humus-rich, permeable soil in a sunny, warm location. Store the tubers warm beforehand, dip them briefly in water and plant them 5-10 cm deep in the soil with a planting distance of 10-30 cm. Water adequately after planting.
Indoors or outdoors – where should I plant?
Freesias used to be traded as houseplants because they cannot tolerate frost. However, there are now interesting hybrids that you can also plant in the garden. However, you should definitely pay attention to a suitable location so that your freesias bloom profusely. It should be warm and sunny.
What soil does the freesia need?
Freesias like moist, pH neutral soil. It should also be humic and permeable. Please note, however, that freesias are quite sensitive to s alts. You should also take this into account when caring for and fertilizing later. However, the soil can be a little clayey.
When is the best time to plant?
Freesias are not hardy, so they may only be planted when night frosts are no longer expected, i.e. definitely not before the Ice Saints. It's better to wait until the end of May or beginning of June. The soil temperature should be constantly above + 5 °C.
Rain-wet soil does no harm when planting, the tuber needs a lot of moisture. However, the leaves and flowers do not tolerate moisture well. If you would like to cultivate freesias as houseplants, they can be planted practically all year round, but should not be done during the flowering period.
What should I pay attention to when planting?
Since the flowers of the freesias themselves are very brightly colored, they should stand alone, without competition from other flowering plants. You can arrange your freesias in groups and play with the colors. For beautiful flowers, it is important that you plant undamaged and large tubers, at least five centimeters in diameter.
Store the tubers of your freesias nice and warm for a few days at at least 20 °C. Shortly before planting, place the tubers in warm water. While still moist, place them five to ten centimeters deep in the soil. Depending on the species, the planting distance is ten to 30 centimeters.
