The Guzmania plant only has a short existence. Even their owner can't change that. But in collaboration with the old specimen, it can create new plants. While they drive out Kindl on their own and willingly, he has to give them their own pot when the time comes.
How to propagate a Guzmania plant?
The Guzmania can be easily propagated by kindling by carefully cutting it from the mother plant and planting it in nutrient-rich soil. Propagation from seeds, on the other hand, is lengthy and demanding and is only rarely possible with hybrid varieties.
Short life requires replacement
After about 2-3 years, the life of this bromeliad species comes to an end. It blooms, withers and then dies completely. If the vacant space is to be filled again with this type of bromeliad, you must ask yourself the question of propagation in good time.
An easy and a difficult method
There are two ways to propagate this type of bromeliad:
- the laborious path of seed propagation,
- and the easy way via Kindel
The two propagation methods are described in more detail below.
Propagation from seeds
The hybrid varieties common in our country cannot be propagated from seeds. The real Guzmania, on the other hand, provides us with usable seeds. But at home, sowing is time-consuming and demanding. Germination is only possible at a soil temperature of at least25 °C possible. Even after this, the young plants must be provided with constant living conditions for a full three years. This includes humid air and a minimum temperature of 22 °C.
The seeds, whether from your own plant or from a specialist retailer (€4.00 on Amazon), must be sown as soon as possible because the seeds do not remain germinable for long. The best time for sowing is spring.
Propagation by Kindel
Propagation using Kindel is much easier to implement. After flowering, the plant itself sprouts small daughter plants on the side, which can lead an independent existence after separation.
- Carefully cut off the child from the mother plant
- plant in light, nutrient-rich soil
- cover with a large glass
- alternatively cover with translucent foil
- place warm and partially shaded
- ideal soil temperature is 25°C
- water sparingly at the beginning
Tip
After about four months, you should treat the young plants like adult specimens.
Optimal timing
Leave the offshoots on the mother plant for as long as possible. This makes them more resilient and blooms more quickly after separation. It is recommended that the children be approximately half the size of the mother plant when planted. You should preferably get your own pot in spring.
