If you want to enjoy a strong, green, dense lawn all summer long, April is the most important month for the necessary care measures. In the winter, the lawn grasses' metabolism had slowed down significantly and there was hardly any growth above ground. In spring it is now important to lay the foundation for good growth. But which measures make sense?

What should you consider when caring for your lawn in April?

The lawn should be scarified in April to remove thatch and moss. Fertilization is then important when the daffodil blooms. Bare spots can be reseeded and, if necessary, the soil can be limed to achieve the correct pH value.

Preparatory work: scarifying

This removes thatch, dead plant parts and moss. The grass roots receive more oxygen and can regenerate.

Verticutters have a spindle or axis that is equipped with rigid or rotatable blades. These scratch the turf a few millimeters deep and tear out the felt.

The right fertilization

The lawn should be fertilized as soon as the daffodils are in full bloom. This is the point at which the greenery begins to grow again and utilizes the nutrients supplied well.

  • Sprinkle the fertilizer evenly onto the dryest possible grass by hand or with a spreader.
  • Make sure that there are no overlaps, as overdosing can cause lawn damage.
  • Then water the lawn thoroughly for at least 20 minutes.
  • A few days after fertilization, shorten the grass to about four to five centimeters.

Reseeding

Bare spots may remain after mowing. In order to avoid the establishment of weeds, they should be reseeded as quickly as possible.

  • Loosen the surface a little and spread the grass seeds.
  • Also work some seeds into the turf.
  • Keep the affected areas moist for at least four weeks.
  • Do not cut the young grass back more than five centimeters.
  • Fertilize the lawn regularly, even during the summer months.

Tip

Lawns do not thrive on acidic soil. Therefore, test the pH value approximately every three to four years. If the result falls below the value of 5.5, you should bring it to a value of 6 to 7 through targeted liming.
