Planting this immigrant vine, also known as immortality herb, is not a closed book. The optimal location must be found and the best time awaited. The rest is tried and tested everyday gardening.
What is the best way to grow Jiaogulan?
To successfully plant Jiaogulan, the immortality herb, choose a partially shaded location outdoors or a bright spot indoors. Use humus-rich, well-drained soil and plant in spring. Provide a climbing aid and ensure adequate, but not excessive, watering.
The best location for immortality herb
In its native Asia, the jungle plant Jiaogulan grows in the shade of neighboring plants. Too much sun is also harmful in this country. Choose a semi-shady location for it outdoors, as it can tolerate sun in the morning and evening. The plant grows he althily even in the shade, but remains smaller. Which doesn't have to be a disadvantage given their otherwise enormous size.
The easiest way to grow it indoors is as a hanging plant in a bright place. Since it likes warm and humid air, it is best kept in a bright bathroom.
Note:If the leaves on your plant curl, the possible cause could be that the location is too sunny.
This substrate can be it
Humid soil (€12.00 at Amazon) is completely sufficient for this plant. For better permeability, loamy soil should be mixed with a little sand. Because in addition to dryness, this plant also doesn't like waterlogging.
Time for planting
Young plants are available in stores from March to around October. You can plant these immediately in the garden at home. But the really optimal time for planting outdoors is spring. Then the plant has enough time to root and establish its winter hardiness. However, there is no time limit for planting as a houseplant.
If you propagate Jiaogulan yourself, for example via cuttings, the young plants must have reached a certain size before they go into the bed. If necessary, they should remain in the pot for the first year and overwinter indoors in a frost-free and bright place. They are then planted out in spring.
How to plant in the garden
- Water the root ball thoroughly.
- Dig a planting hole.
- Add some mature compost to the excavation.
- Do not plant the plant too deep and only press it lightly.
- Water the plant.
- Set up a long trellis right away and tie the existing tendrils to it.
Planting in a bucket
Use a 5 liter pot for young plants. The home of large specimens should have a volume of at least 10 liters. In both cases, the pot must be perforated and provided with a drainage layer. If Jiaogulan is not cultivated as a hanging plant, it also needs a climbing aid in the pot.
