This Asian climbing plant with amazing healing powers is still a newcomer to us. Did you know that it is also called women's ginseng, five-leaf ginseng or simply the herb of immortality? We will now familiarize you a little with this plant and answer in detail the question about the ideal winter storage.
How can Jiaogulan be optimally wintered in winter?
To overwinter Jiaogulan in winter, note the following: Houseplants do not need additional protection. Place potted plants at 15-20°C in bright winter quarters. Plants planted in the bed should be covered with brushwood, straw or leaves to protect the rhizome.
Hardy, but with restrictions
Jiaogulan is only partially hardy. This means that the herb cannot safely survive every winter on its own. In order for it to survive outside, the thermometer must not fall below -15°C.
Houseplants stay in place
It may be stormy and snowing outside, but inside the house it stays pleasantly warm. The immortality herb, which is cultivated purely as a houseplant, does not experience any frost. You can relax and enjoy the green of the leaves because you don't have to look for a place to spend the winter.
Since Jiaogulan has to get by with less light in winter, it is beneficial if you cut the houseplant back a little. You can dry the cut leaves and use them to make tea.
Tip
Cutted, not yet woody shoots make good cuttings. In a warm place in the house you can also try propagating in autumn.
Keep container specimens safe
Immortality herb in a pot can be placed in the garden or on the balcony on warm days. However, the bucket does not offer the roots sufficient protection from frost. Even wrapping it with fleece and a protected place are not enough. In the fall, you need to find a new location in the house for Jiaogulan.
- overwinter at temperatures of 15 to 20 °C
- bright winter quarters are ideal
- cut back heavily during dark overwintering
Leave immortality herb in the bed
Climbing plants planted in the garden are allowed to overwinter in place. If all above-ground parts of the plant die off in autumn, there is no reason to worry. The plant is still alive, albeit in secret! The rhizome will find the strength to sprout again in the spring. But until then, despite the winter hardiness, you shouldn't leave it without protection. Better safe than sorry!
- especially young plants need protection
- also protect old specimens in rough locations
- leave dry leftovers until spring
- they keep some of the cold out
- Cover the root area with brushwood, straw or lots of leaves
Care in winter
All Jiaogulan plants that spend the winter in a bright, warm room retain their green foliage. On the one hand, this is nice because you can continue to harvest leaves. At the same time, you also need to provide her with a minimum level of care. First of all, don't forget to water.
