The Chinese hemp palm may have special requirements for its nutrient supply in this country because the living conditions can be challenging for it. But does that mean the cornucopia has to be generously poured out over them? Rather not! Read more about fertilizing this type of palm tree as needed.
How should you fertilize a Trachycarpus fortunei?
To optimally fertilize a Trachycarpus fortunei, use organic long-term fertilizers such as compost, horse manure or horn shavings in spring and, if necessary, again in July. Potted plants benefit from special palm fertilizer or slow-release fertilizer during the growing season from March to September.
Suitable fertilizers and dosage
In order for Trachycarpus fortunei to grow new palm fronds in the summer and go into the winter stronger, it needs certain nutrients in sufficient quantities. First of all, the following should be noted regarding dosage: The palm tree does better with too little fertilizer, especially if the soil conditions are right. However, too much fertilizer is harmful.
The best way to fertilize outside is with compost, horse manure or horn shavings. Potted palms are easier to supply with commercial fertilizer. Special palm fertilizer with plenty of nitrogen is ideal. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. In order to avoid harmful over-fertilization, it is even advisable to reduce the recommended dosage a little.
When is fertilization done?
Immediately after planting in the bed or after repotting, the hemp palm does not need to be fertilized for a few months. Plant soil from the trade is enriched with nutrients, while in the garden the excavation is usually mixed with compost.
Planted specimens receive the organic long-term fertilizer in spring. A second portion may be given by July at the latest if the soil is very poor and sandy. Afterwards and during wintering, no more fertilization is carried out.
You can provide potted plants with a suitable long-term fertilizer (€3.00 on Amazon) or fertilizer sticks or use a liquid fertilizer every two weeks. However, fertilization is only carried out during the growing season from the end of March to September.
Tip
If the hemp palm in the garden shows yellow leaves, this could be an indication of a nutrient deficiency. In this case, you should use a mineral fertilizer such as blue grain because its nutrients are immediately available.
Home remedies as fertilizer
To fertilize the hemp palm, in addition to commercial fertilizers and compost, you can also use a few proven home remedies:
- diluted nettle manure
- diluted comfrey manure
- Coffee grounds (rich in nitrogen)
Tip
Too much coffee grounds can lead to soil acidification. Provide the palm tree with additional rock dust. This counteracts this and also contributes some valuable trace elements.
