The waterweed is a sought-after plant because it is an enrichment for ponds and aquariums. If a specimen already exists, additional plants rarely need to be purchased. Propagation is so easy that it can hardly fail.
How do you successfully propagate waterweed?
To multiply waterweed, a section at least 2 cm long without roots is sufficient. It can be planted at the back of the aquarium at any time, and in the pond from April at a depth of 30 cm to 2 m. Constant temperatures, lots of light and sufficient CO2 promote growth.
Vegetative propagation is easy
The water plague can easily be propagated vegetatively. A head cutting or simply a section of the plant that is at least 2 cm long and does not have to have any roots is sufficient. Getting both shouldn't be difficult, as waterweed is known for its meter-long and branched shoots.
You can also take a piece of waterweed from a natural body of water, as this aquatic plant is not protected. Transport the waterweed in a bag filled with water to prevent it from drying out.
The ideal time
Waterweed can be reproduced at any time in the aquarium, as it usually finds constant conditions all year round. In the pond, reproduction can begin in spring, around April.
Plant or let it float in water
You can plant both the head cutting and the section in the substrate or let them float in the water. Since the placement of the various plants in the aquarium plays a crucial role, it is better to plant the propagation material. A place at the back of the tank is ideal so that waterweed does not shade other plants due to its strong spread.
- remove lower leaves
- Put the head cutting or section into the ground
- in the pond the ideal water depth is 30 cm to 2 m
- Starting fertilization is not necessary
Tip
Don't overdo propagation by adding many pieces to the pond or aquarium. Otherwise, you may soon have to fight the rampant water pest.
Favorable propagation conditions in the aquarium
Now all you have to do is make sure that the planted propagation piece has ideal living conditions so that it can take root and sprout again.
- constant temperature up to max. 28 °C
- CO2 per liter: 10-20 mg
- lots of light
Tip
Since Argentine waterweed growing in the pond is only partially hardy, you can overwinter a piece in the aquarium and use it to propagate new plants for the pond from spring onwards.
