The tuberose can be the star of the summer with its numerous, pleasantly scented inflorescences. In spring, however, the entire splendor of the plant is still hidden as potential in a tuber. This needs to get off to a good start.

How do you plant a tuberose correctly?

To plant a tuberose correctly, you should wait for frost-free times or grow it indoors. A sunny, wind-protected spot with nutrient-rich, permeable soil should be chosen outdoors. The planting depth is 5-7 centimeters, the distance between the tubers is 15-30 centimeters.

Wait for frost or advance in the house

When nature awakens to new life early in the year, tuberose is not there. The tuber must not be placed in the garden soil because late frosts could still occur. Planting from the end of March can only be considered if the weather forecast predicts warm weeks.

So that the tuberose, botanically Agave polianthes, doesn't start from scratch outside, the clever owner drives it indoors. This way he can admire the flowers a little earlier.

  • start in February
  • Putting bulbs in flower pots
  • Use nutrient-rich potting soil (€10.00 on Amazon)
  • Cover tubers by max. 2 cm with it
  • light, but not too warm
  • Keep soil slightly moist
  • water more after the leaves emerge

Finding the ideal outdoor space

Location, location, location! This is an important ingredient for blooming tuberose landscapes. So before you take the tubers out of overwintering or from the windowsill, you should have found a suitable place for them. It must be sunny and windless, with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil.

Work some mature compost into the soil. If the soil is clayey, loosen it up with additional sand or bark mulch. An acidic pH value is adjusted to the plant's requirements with around 100 grams of lime per square meter.

Tip

Do not choose a location for the tuberose close to the house or in places where you prefer or often spend time in summer. Because the intensely fragrant flowers develop into a bee magnet.

Place the onions correctly

Bulbs that have not sprouted should ideally be planted in the garden by the end of April. Blooming is not guaranteed at later dates. On the other hand, advanced specimens can be planted from May to June.

If planting is possible early due to the weather, then it is advisable to plant a “portion” every two weeks. So not all specimens bloom at once. Please note the following points when planting the bulbs:

  • Planting depth is 5 to 7 centimeters
  • Distance between two tubers: 15 to 30 cm
