The lotus flower does not occur naturally in this country, but it can be planted specifically. To ensure that it stays he althy and blooms, its special requirements must be taken into account when planting. In addition, a great deal of care is required because its rhizome is sensitive.
How to plant a lotus flower?
To plant a lotus flower, choose a sunny location and plant the rhizome in loamy garden soil with mineral fertilizer in spring (March-April). Place the plant in a large pot or pond area, covering the rhizome but leaving the shoot exposed. Maintain a water level of at least 5-10 cm above the root ball.
The time window for planting
The rhizome of the lotus flower is delicate, parts can easily break off and cause the plant to die. The rhizome can be planted most safely during its rest period from March to April. This is also the period in which rhizomes are available for purchase in stores.
Tip
You can get lotus plants cheaply if you start growing them yourself from seeds or propagate them by dividing the rhizome.
Planting in pots
Pot planting is a good idea if you don't have a garden pond or would like to admire the lotus as a houseplant. Get a round pot with a volume of 60 to 90 liters for the lotus flower. It should be approx. 60 cm deep and at least 50 cm wide. A dark colored pot is beneficial as it heats up faster and retains heat longer.
- loamy garden soil is ideal
- the lower 20 cm are mixed with mineral fertilizer
- this is followed by an approx. 10 cm high layer without fertilizer
- water with lukewarm water until soil becomes mushy
- Dig a rhizome-sized hole and place the rhizome in it
- Sprouts must not be covered by soil
- Fill 5-10 cm of water over it
- Wait for the floating leaves to emerge
- then raise the water level to 30 cm
Tip
Do not add compost and other organic fertilizers to the lotus flower, as these lead to rot when combined with water.
Planting in the pond
The simplest option is to first plant the lotus in a pot and then place it in the pond in a sunny spot. If a larger pond requires at least two square meters for the lotus flower and is at least 60 cm deep, you can separate this area with an approx. 40 cm high wall and fill it with nutrient-rich soil.
One rhizome is planted per square meter. Without much care, the lotus flower can grow and overwinter in it for many years.
