Nordmann firs are popular, and not just as a Christmas tree. The evergreen plant can also beautify a garden – for many, many years. Since the decision for a variety lasts for a long time, it must be made well. The selection is here.
What varieties of Nordmann firs are there?
There are different varieties of Nordmann firs, such as Ambrolauri, Apsheronsk, Arkhyz, Artvin Yalya, Borshomi and Krasnaja. These varieties differ in growth habit, needles, frost hardiness and suitability for different locations.
Region of origin as namesake
The names of the fir varieties seem strange to us Central Europeans. This is because they got their name from their region of origin. These towns are mostly located in the distant Caucasus. Here are a few examples:
- Ambrolauri
- Apsheronsk
- Arkhyz
- Artvin Yalya
- Borshomi
- Krasnaya
Ambrolauri
Ambrolauri is an undemanding Nordmann fir with very long, dense and dark green needles. The late shoots protect them from damage caused by late frosts. The tree grows vigorously and, above all, broadly.
Apsheronsk
A variety from the North Caucasus that is ideal for rough locations due to its good frost hardiness. It grows narrow to medium wide and reaches a height of up to 25 m. Compared to “Ambrolauri”, the needles are shorter and not as lush.
Arkhyz
The meaning of the word is beautiful girl. This fir also forms a beautiful crown. It consists of short needles, is narrow and very dense, but quite stable.
Artvin Yalya
The narrow habit is characterized by lush, deep green needles. The fir grows quickly even on drier soils. However, this variety is more sensitive to frost than many others.
Borshomi
Borshomi is the most famous Christmas tree that you can buy from us. The variety with bushy needles grows quickly and pyramid-like, is wide at the bottom and narrow at the top. As a solitary plant in the garden, the tree needs a lot of space to develop freely.
Krasnaya
This Nordmann fir of Russian origin grows well and strives for great heights. A slim stature and short needles are typical.
Special feature “Golden Spreader”
The classic varieties are supplemented by breeding. The variety called “Golden Spreader” stands out with its beauty. It is a dwarf form with the following characteristics:
- max. Height 1.5 m, width 1 m
- annual growth approx. 3 cm
- the needles are bright yellow to yellow-green
- produces thick cones
Tip
Plant this variety in a partially shaded area of the garden to prevent its golden needles from suffering sunburn.
