Phalaenopsis not only refers to a plant, but also to a genus, namely the so-called butterfly or moth orchids. These exotic plants are very popular, especially the numerous hybrid species. However, there are a few things to consider when watering.
How should you water a Phalaenopsis orchid?
A Phalaenopsis orchid needs moderate moisture in the substrate once a week, without waterlogging. Use stale, room temperature rainwater or tap water and water more during the flowering period. In addition, you should regularly supply the plant with orchid fertilizer.
How much water do Phalaenopsis need?
Ideally, the moisture of the substrate always ranges between slightly dry and moderately moist. It must neither dry out nor be waterlogged; these orchids cannot tolerate either. Under normal conditions they need water about once a week, the exact need of course depends on the location and the conditions there.
Which water should I use?
Phalaenopsis does not tolerate fresh, cold tap water well at all. She is used to relatively warm rain in her homeland. You should also water hybrid breeds with room temperature, stale rainwater if this is possible. If you don't have rainwater available, let tap water stand for a day or two before watering your orchids. This water should also be room temperature or lukewarm.
How should I water during flowering?
During the flowering period, the orchid needs more water than during the resting phase. Especially if the flowers become limp, you should water more often and/or more. In addition, the need for nutrients is increased during this time. Therefore, add orchid fertilizer regularly to the watering water.
