The standard rule is often read: hedges should always be planted in autumn. However, depending on the root packaging, a different season can also be chosen. In the following article we would like to go into more detail about the optimal planting time and give you valuable tips for planting the bushes.
When is the best time to plant a hedge?
The optimal planting time for hedges depends on the root packaging: container plants can be planted all year round, ball plants during dormancy (September to May) and bare-root shrubs ideally in September or October.
Type of hedge is crucial
Hedges are a variety of bushes that, when planted in a row, create a dense privacy screen. Depending on the location of the garden, spatial conditions and individual preferences, a wide variety of plants can be used.
What is important for the planting time is whether the shrubs are
- Ball plants,
- Containerware,
- or bare root plants
acts.
Container Plants
With these, the bush is in a planter with soil, so the root ball is well protected and goes into the ground undamaged. The plants have almost always grown in their pot, so they do not suffer any loss of root mass.
That's why a hedge made from container goods can be planted at any time of the year. Thanks to the complete root ball, this is possible even in summer, when high temperatures and sunlight cause problems for the plants.
Hedge plants with bales
These are plucked from the ground before being transported to the garden center or right in front of your eyes at the tree nursery. They grew up outdoors without a protective flower pot and are therefore relatively robust. Hedge plants with bales are planted during dormancy, which lasts from September to May.
The period is significantly shorter for evergreen bales. You should plant these plants in September or October so that they root before the winter months.
Think about the plant pruning. The bushes that have lost roots during digging compensate for this by providing more sparse supplies to the upper parts of the plant. Pruning ensures that they sprout strong and he althy in spring.
Bare-rooted shrubs
These come out of the ground without any protective soil. As a rule, only deciduous shrubs are offered bare root. Since some of the bales were lost during digging and transport, these bushes have fewer fine roots than plants that you bought in containers or at least with bales. In order for the hedge plants to grow well, it is important to plant bare-root crops only in the cold season, preferably in the months of September or October.
Tip
Regardless of which plants you choose, you should water the newly planted hedge regularly. In a hot summer, a freshly planted hedge needs to be watered daily. As a rule of thumb: Each plant should receive at least 15 liters of water per watering unit.
