What ingredients are contained in rooting powder?

Rooting powder contains natural or chemical growth hormones such as indole-3-acetic acid, indole-3-butyric acid and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid as well as solvents and fillers such as alcohol and talc. These hormones promote cell division and longitudinal growth of the plants, which stimulates the root growth of the cuttings.

How does rooting powder work for professional use and what does it contain?

These products contain natural or chemical growth hormones. These can be, for example:

  • Indole-3-acetic acid,
  • Indole-3-butyric acid,
  • 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid.

There are also solvents and fillers such as alcohol and talc.

The hormones belong to the group of growth regulators that occur in almost all higher plants. They are responsible for cell division and the length growth of cells.

Administering these active ingredients to cuttings stimulates root growth. This increases the breeding success of plants that are more hesitant to form roots and the failure rate is lower. The root system formed is also significantly more stable. The seedlings can absorb more water and nutrients and grow more vigorously.

Rooting powder made from algae extract, for example, is approved for home use. This works through natural growth hormones as well as nutrients and trace elements that promote root growth.

Other products contain soil additives with fertilizer components. However, these hardly affect the root formation of freshly cut cuttings. However, the preparations are definitely helpful; plant seedlings that have already formed roots in substrate. The activators encourage the offspring to root faster and better and to develop a stable root system.

How to use rooting powder correctly?

Since the dosage form of the preparations differs, you should read the package leaflet carefully before use and follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly. The following precautionary measures are recommended when handling products that contain chemical or partially chemical hormones:

  • Always wear gloves when using.
  • Make sure that the powder does not come into contact with the skin or mucous membranes.

Tip

Be sure to avoid using too much rooting powder. The effect is reversed by overdose. The plants no longer form stronger roots, but instead they die.
