You were caught in a downpour while shopping and the s alt you just bought got wet, so this is no reason to throw away the white powder straight away. We describe in detail how you can easily get the s alt dry and free-flowing again in the following article.
How to dry wet s alt and prevent clumping?
To dry wet s alt, spread it thinly on a baking sheet or in a bowl and let it air dry or in the oven at a low temperature. Alternatively, the s alt can be dried in the microwave. If clumps occur, crushing them in a freezer bag or mortar helps.
Rice removes moisture from the s alt
Our grandmothers kept table s alt dry by adding a few grains of rice to the s alt shaker. If the s alt has only become slightly moist, this old trick still works very well. The rice removes some moisture from the crystals so that they can be scattered again without lumps.
Allow s alt to air dry
This might be the easiest method:
- Put the wet s alt in a thin layer in a large bowl or on a baking tray.
- Place everything near the heater.
- Stir the s alt again and again until it is completely dry.
- Then pour into a tightly sealing container.
Drying s alt in the oven
It's quicker than in the air if you line a baking tray with baking paper, put the s alt on it and dry it in the oven. To do this, switch on the lowest temperature and leave the oven door slightly open by holding a wooden spoon in it. After a few hours the white powder has dried.
Drying s alt in the microwave
If you have a microwave oven, you can dry the s alt very quickly in it.
- Put the s alt in a suitable bowl and place everything in the device. Dry the white powder on the lowest setting in minute increments.
- Stir again and again so that the moisture completely escapes.
The dry s alt clumps
If the s alt is no longer free-flowing after drying, it can easily be pulverized again:
- Put the s alt in a freezer bag, squeeze out the air and seal the bag.
- Use a rolling pin to roll over the crystals in the bag several times.
Smaller lumps can be finely crushed with a mortar or used in a s alt mill.
Tip
The fact that s alt remains free-flowing is due to the anti-caking agents it contains. If the crystals clump together, you can assume that no chemical additives have been added to them.
