Design tip: combine pampas grass with other dried flowers and grasses
When combining Cortaderia selloana with other dried flowers, there are no limits to your options. In addition to putting together several plants of the same type or color, colorful bouquets can also be made. The possible combinations listed below should therefore only be seen as suggestions.
Before using it as a dried flower, e.g. black colored pampas grass, the ornamental grass must be dried well. The stalks of the hardy perennial should be cut back in autumn at the end of the flowering period. Detailed instructions for drying and then preparing the still-blooming fronds can be found here.
When draping the individual stems, you should ensure that all plants are clearly visible. For this it may be necessary to shorten particularly long-stemmed specimens. In addition, it is advisable to select one plant per vase as a highlight and to highlight it visually. Several flowers that are visually equally strong usually lead to an inharmonious composition.

In addition to the color, the height, the material and the diameter of the opening play a crucial role in choosing the right vase. The most important criteria are compiled for you below.
Height
With good care, pampas grass can reach a height of up to 300 centimeters in a nutrient-rich, humus-rich and well-drained location while maintaining the required planting distance. In addition to these tall-growing varieties, there are now also many short-growing species that reach a maximum height of 100 centimeters. The height of the vase is therefore directly related to the length of the stalk. It is generally advisable to leave a distance of five to ten centimeters between the lower end of the fronds and the upper edge of the vase. This gives the flower spikes enough space and doesn't make them appear squat.
Material
The most commonly used materials for making vases are glass, ceramics and metal. The individual materials differ in their structure and weight, but they are all well suited. All vessels presented in advance are completely waterproof. The selection of a material is often directly related to the desired look, so that you can develop freely.
Diameter of opening
The diameter of the upper opening should not be too small, but also not too large. In the first variant, the dried flowers often appear very squat, whereas in the second variant there are large gaps between the individual stems. In practice, a minimum diameter of two centimeters has proven useful in order to be able to place at least five stems. If the diameter is larger, more flowers should be used, although a diameter of more than nine centimeters is not recommended.

The previously separated stems along with the flower spikes should be dried upside down for several weeks. Before the fronds can be placed in a vase, you should remove any loose materials and blow-dry them until fluffy using a hairdryer. To maintain the shape, these should be secured with hairspray or clear varnish.
How to care for pampas grass in a vase?
Pampas grass in a vase requires little care. In any case, the stalks and fronds should be kept away from water, as this can lead to mold formation. In addition, the fronds should be regularly cleaned of loose lint and blow-dried into shape using a hairdryer. Finally, we recommend fixing it again with hairspray or clear varnish.
Which grasses can be combined with pampas grass in the vase?
Due to the different growth heights, color variations from silver-white to gray-green and frond formation, pampas grass can be combined with many other types of grass.
