Tree or wooden discs offer a wide range of design options. Read how you can make an insect hotel out of it, an individual wardrobe or even a rustic wall decoration, even with little craftsmanship. Wooden discs can even be used for cozy wall paneling.
How can I design a tree disk creatively?
Tree slices can be designed in various ways, such as by planting orchids, painting with acrylic or oil paints, decorating with pyrography, sawing out motifs or as an insect hotel. Make sure the tree slices are well dried before using them.
Can I plant the tree disk?
The term “tree slice” means two things in German: The gardener uses the term to mean an area of approximately one meter around each tree trunk that can be planted naturally - otherwise you should cover the bare earth with mulch, so that it doesn't dry out. Just make sure that the tree has been in its location for at least five years and that you plant shade-tolerant species such as hostas.
But wooden tree discs can also be easily planted, for example with typical epiphytes such as orchids.
How can you plant a wooden disc?
If you want to plant orchids on a flat wooden disc, these tips might help you:
- Clean the wooden disc thoroughly.
- Oil them carefully.
- Do not use toxic chemical agents to protect wood.
- Drill at least four evenly spaced holes through which you will thread a chain or cord.

- Attach moss (e.g. sphagnum) to the wooden disc, e.g. B. with a fine hair net and glue.
- Tie the orchid on top.
Orchids planted in this way are not watered, but only sprayed.
How can you decorate a wooden disc?

How do I make an insect hotel out of a tree slice?
You can easily turn a tree disc into an insect hotel: To do this, drill holes of different diameters into the wood with a cordless drill. Drill the holes as deep as possible, but not all the way through. Then hang the tree disc in a warm and sunny place in the garden.
Can I also use tree slices for paving?
Of course you can also use tree slices for paving or wall cladding. In outdoor areas, however, you should make sure that the wood is treated with a weatherproof paint or polish so that it does not rot so quickly.
For wall paneling, attach the well-dried wooden discs with assembly glue. This means they stay in place and no drill holes are visible. For paving, you should only use slices of hardwood that are several centimeters thick, as they are more stable and more resistant to wear and tear.

Do not use fresh tree slices for crafting or crafting: These should be dried thoroughly before each use, which can take several months or even years depending on their thickness and size. It's quicker in the drying chamber of a carpenter or carpenter.
