Beautiful mallows (bot. Abutilon) are grateful pot and house plants. Since they don't get very wide, you can also accommodate several plants. Propagation is quite easy. This is how you propagate the decorative indoor maple.
How can you propagate mallow?
Beautiful mallows can be propagated by sowing and cuttings. When sowing, place seeds in a prepared container with soil, cover them and lightly moisten them. When propagating by cuttings, cut off half-woody shoots and place them in potting soil to allow them to take root.
Propagate beautiful mallows
There are two methods with which the slightly poisonous mallow can be propagated: by sowing and cuttings. Propagation via cuttings is carried out more often because it is particularly easy.
Propagation by sowing
- Prepare the sowing container
- Put out seeds
- Cover with soil
- Lightly moisturize
- Put on glass pane or foil
- Set up warm and bright
The ideal germination temperature is around 18 degrees. Avoid strong temperature differences.
Until the seeds germinate, remove the foil or glass once a day so that the soil and later the seedling do not become moldy.
After emergence, the small mallows are placed individually in small pots. Place it in a sheltered place where it is warm and bright enough.
Propagate beautiful mallow through cuttings
It is best to cut cuttings for propagation either immediately after the first shoots or in summer. Select semi-lignified shoots. They root best.
The individual cuttings should be around 15 centimeters long. Remove the lower leaves and any bud bases.
Prepare small pots with potting soil (€6.00 on Amazon). Make sure the soil is loose. If necessary, mix them with a little sand or peat.
Root cuttings
Place the prepared cuttings into the soil and press them lightly. Spray the shoots with water so that the soil does not get too wet.
Drying out of the soil must be avoided at all costs. Cover the cutting with transparent foil to prevent the water from evaporating. The film must be ventilated once a day.
You can tell that the cuttings have formed roots by the fact that new leaves and small shoots are forming. Now the beautiful mallow can be cared for as normal.
Tip
The non-hardy mallows are available in numerous varieties. They differ primarily in the color of the flowers. The color spectrum ranges from white, yellow, orange, pink and light purple to dark red.
