Anyone who has snails in the garden is certainly open to home remedies, alternative methods and even a little cruelty, because slugs cause a lot of damage to the garden in a very short time. Learn how to dispose of your snails below.
How to get rid of snails in the garden?
The best and most animal-friendly way to dispose of snails is to collect them and carry them away, preferably at least 20 meters from the garden. Collecting is most effective at dusk or after a downpour when the snails are active.
What are the best methods to dispose of snails?
The following methods of snail control are common:
- Scald snails with hot water
- Cutting snails
- Poisoning snails with slug pellets
- Sprinkle snails with s alt
- Collect and dispose of snails
The latter is the most animal-friendly method - and very effective at that. Dousing with hot water is also acceptable, as the animals die a quick death here. You should definitely avoid poisoning with snail pellets, as this also kills the useful snails and harms other microorganisms and the environment. If the snails are sprinkled with s alt, they die a painful death, which is why this should definitely be avoided!
How can you collect and dispose of snails?
If you want to get rid of snails permanently, you should keep a few things in mind when collecting and disposing of them:
- Collect the snails at dusk and/or after a downpour, as this is where they are most active.
- Lay out resting places, such as boards or large leaves, under which the snails will hide. Then collect them there.
- Put the snails far enough away so they don't come back!
How far do you have to carry snails?
So that the snails don't come back, they should be carried away at least 20 meters. Otherwise the snail will find its way back – unless it finds a better place to stay on the way.
Tip
Do not wear gloves when collecting
Snail slime is found in many cosmetics these days as it reduces wrinkles, skin spots and acne and moisturizes the skin. So use the slime of your garden snails (without hurting them) and collect them with your bare hands. Your skin will thank you!
