It is considered a valuable autumn bloomer and impresses for months with its large flowers, which visually nestle beautifully against those of other plants. But which companion plants are actually suitable for the sedum?
Which plants can be combined with the sedum?
Optimal companion plants for the sedum are steppe sage, lavender, ornamental grasses (e.g. feather grass, riding grass, pennisetum grass), roses, autumn asters, yellow coneflowers, shrub veronica and autumn anemones. Pay attention to common location requirements and flowering times.
What factors should you consider when combining the sedum?
In order to emphasize and not diminish the picturesque image of the sedum through a combination, you should keep the following factors in mind:
- Flower color: white, yellow, pink or red
- Flowering time: August to October (high stonecrop)
- Site requirements: sunny, well-drained and sandy soil
- Growth height: up to 60 cm
The flower color of the sedum is less bright and intense. For this reason, it can be excellently combined with plants that have more intense colors without the overall picture looking overloaded or kitschy.
When choosing planting partners, please note that the stonecrop only presents its flowers from late summer until autumn.
As an admirer of the sun, the sedum should be placed with neighbors who also enjoy growing in the sun. Otherwise, their floral bliss would diminish significantly in the shade.

Combine stonecrop with pennisetum grass
An equally enriching combination is created by the compact and rather heavy-looking sedum and the feather-light and fluffy-looking pennisetum grass. They visually complement each other. However, make sure to place the sedum in front of the taller growing pennisetum.
Combine stonecrop with autumn anemone
If you combine the sedum with an autumn anemone, you will be able to enjoy a variety of flowers from August to October. In this combination, the autumn anemone creates the image of the sedum and sets pretty accents with its long stems and delicate flowers.
Combine stonecrop as a bouquet in the vase
It gets really autumnal with the sedum in the bouquet when it is joined by rose hips, hydrangeas and roses. A little gypsophila gives the arrangement a delightful charm. In principle, all autumn flowers are suitable for a bouquet with the sedum, as the sedum is rather plain in color and forms a stable base with its wide flowers.
