The common thrush, which is often found on sections of the beach, not only has a decorative effect on the coast, but also in many gardens. It owes this primarily to its dense growth and its bright flower heads. What options are there to combine them?

Which plants go well with the carnation?

Carnation combines well with candytuft, blue cushion, lavender, horned violet, speedwell, catnip, tamarisk and rock alyssum. Pay attention to similar location requirements, height of growth and harmonious flower colors.

What factors should you consider when combining grass cloves?

In order to support the effect of the carnation, you should choose the right companion plants. To do this, it makes sense to consider the following factors:

  • Flower color: white, pink or carmine
  • Flowering time: May to September
  • Site requirements: sunny, well-drained and dry soil
  • Growth height: 10 to 15 cm

It is advisable to combine carnations with plants in such a way that their flowers are visually highlighted. To do this, you can specifically plant grasses or other flowering plants near them.

Also consider location preferences. Since carnations prefer a sunny and rather dry location, their companion plants should be able to get used to it.

The low growth of the carnations is also important in planning. This makes them more suitable for foreground plantings. Your planting partners should either be the same height or taller and then planted behind them.

Combine carnation in the bed or in the pot

In an almost miraculous way, the small carnation in the bed becomes a delightful feast for the eyes. When it is combined with ground cover plants or low perennials, it creates accents that gently touch the heart. Carnations, for example, look particularly beautiful with white or blue flowering plants that are at about the same height. You can also combine the cloves with drought-loving herbs such as lavender or catnip.

The following companions go particularly well with the carnation:

  • Ribbon flower
  • horn violets
  • Honorary Award
  • Catnip
  • Lavender
  • Tamarisk
  • Rock Alyssum
  • Blue pillow

Combine common carnation with candytuft

Since the candytuft, like the carnation, prefers to be close to the ground, it is a perfect companion plant. But that's not the only reason: with its white to pink flowers, the candytuft also harmonizes in color with the common grass. These two form a composition that leaves an absolutely graceful and magical impression.

Combine grass carnation with blue cushions

The blue cushion loves to soak up the sun's rays and it can easily cope with dryness - just like the carnation. Surprise your senses by combining a bright blue-violet sea of blue cushions with several white or pink carnations into a visual whole.

Combine cloves with lavender

Lavender has similar location requirements as carnation. But it reaches a height higher than the carnation. For this reason, the lavender should be planted in the background of the carnation. White cloves look the most impressive in the combination, as they almost enhance the violet of the lavender.

Combine carnations as a bouquet in the vase

The fine, flower-filled stems of the carnation can enrich bouquets. Individually they would be far too unspectacular. Only when teamed with other flowers that don't grow too much larger do they become true treasures. As a companion, for example in a bouquet of roses together with some gypsophila, carnations can provide the finishing touch.
