The evergreen can literally breathe life into dark areas in the garden. It is the ideal ground cover for shade and produces lots of typically blue-violet colored flowers. Which companion plants can be used to put it in the spotlight?
Which plants go well with evergreens in the garden?
To combine periwinkle in an attractive way, choose companion plants such as golden basket, cranesbill, astilbe, foxglove, lungwort or columbine that have similar location requirements, bloom in spring and work harmoniously with the flower colors of the evergreen.
What factors should you consider when combining evergreens?
Before adding companion plants to the evergreen, you should check whether they fit the following factors:
- Flower color: blue-violet, blue, pink, purple or white
- Flowering time: April to May
- Location requirements: partially shaded, loose and well-drained soil
- Growth height: up to 20 cm
The evergreen is almost unstoppably conquering its territory with its creeping growth. Companion plants should be able to tolerate this and ideally grow higher than the evergreen.
The periwinkle thrives optimally in a partially shaded location on loose soil. Suitable planting partners also give preference to such location conditions.
Also consider the early flowering period of the evergreen. Excellent companion plants also bloom in spring.
Combine evergreen in the bed or in the balcony box
Since the evergreen conquers its location in no time and can hardly be dissuaded, it should be combined with assertive plants. Other ground cover plants are ideal, but especially taller perennials that rise proudly from the sea of evergreen flowers. Purple periwinkle works well with yellow-flowering plants, while white to pink periwinkle looks more beautiful in the company of white or purple companion plants.
Ideal plant neighbors for the evergreen include:
- Gold basket
- Astilbe
- Foxglove
- Storksbill
- Lungwort
- Forest Goatbeard
- Blue-Red Stone Seed
- Aquilegia
Combine periwinkle with cranesbill
As the periwinkle spreads close to the ground, the cranesbill towers between it. It also provides a lush green background, but remains in its intended place. In March/April it unfolds its flowers and interacts with the carpet of evergreen flowers. Since these two plants have a similar spectrum of flower colors, they can be combined harmoniously with each other.
Combine periwinkle with gold baskets
The composition between the basket of gold and the evergreen creates a fantastic feast for the eyes. The basket of gold goes well with the evergreen as it also prefers to remain small and covers the ground and also thrives easily in partial shade. With its sunny yellow flower color, it really shines next to the evergreen. The contrast between light and dark will amaze you.
Combine periwinkle with astilbe
Two flowering plants come together here, which do not bloom at the same time, but alternate. The periwinkle appears lively and full of flowers in spring, while the astilbe only grows in size during this time. When all the flowers of the evergreen have finally given up life, the magnificent inflorescences of the astilbe appear and make the location shine again.
Combine periwinkle as a bouquet in the vase
In principle, periwinkle is suitable for cutting in vases, but due to its short flower stalks it is only suitable for smaller vessels. Therefore, it should also be combined with flowers that have similar requirements. Furthermore, only those that bloom in spring are eligible. Yellow spring bloomers, for example, look wonderful in combination with blue to blue-violet evergreens and a few isolated grape hyacinths.
- Grape Hyacinths
- Wild garlic
- Adonis Roses
- Daffodils
