Unfortunately, pansies have fallen into disrepute partly because of their name. Pansies are incredibly versatile, uncomplicated and not just a gap filler. They fit in soothingly in the bed and on the balcony. Which plant neighbors can you make friends with?
What factors should you consider when combining pansies?
Pansies are extremely sociable. But not every plant is suitable as a companion. When combining, you should therefore consider the following aspects:
- Flower color: white, yellow, red, purple, orange or pink (also multicolored)
- Flowering time: April to October
- Location requirements: sunny to partially shaded, humus-rich and slightly moist soil
- Growth height: up to 20 cm
Thanks to their long flowering period, pansies can interact with numerous plants. But be careful: Since the flowers of pansies are often multicolored, it is advisable to surround them with plants that bloom in one color.
Pansies thrive best in full sun, which is why they should be accompanied by companion plants that have similar preferences.
When combining pansies, also consider their short height. The planting partners should match or be placed correctly.
Combine pansies in the bed or in the balcony box
Since pansies bloom in April, they can be wonderfully combined with other signs of spring. Typical early bloomers usually fit nicely into their surroundings. When the pansies bloom again in the fall, perennials such as hostas are the perfect choice. The dark foliage of the hostas highlights the colorful blooms of the pansies. All plants that like to be in the sun and do not crowd the pansies are suitable as companions in the balcony box.
Companion plants that go well with pansies include:
- horn violets
- Primroses
- Daffodils
- Funkia
- Tulips
- Forget-me-not
- Summer Heath
- Bellis
Combine pansies with tulips
Tulips can span pansies beautifully from behind with their luminosity and grace. Since their long stems clearly tower over the pansies, they should definitely be planted behind them. This combination looks most beautiful when you place both plants in small groups.
Combine pansies with forget-me-nots
The pansy can be delicately surrounded by the forget-me-nots like little stepdaughters. This interaction is not characterized by arguments, but by harmony, as the forget-me-not is reserved and has similar location requirements as the pansy.
Combine pansies with horned violets
The horned violet resembles the pansy not only externally, but also in terms of its location requirements and growth height. The two can therefore be staged together easily and charmingly. For example, equip a balcony box with them and combine different contrasting colors with each other.
Combine pansies as a bouquet in the vase
Small but beautiful, a bouquet of pansies will be. The short stems pair well with other short-stemmed spring flowers. For example, you can create a bouquet of pansies and grape hyacinths. The almost floating flowers of the lady's mantle also fit fantastically into such a bouquet of pansies and their accompaniment.
- woman's coat
- Grape Hyacinths
- Ranunculus
- Daisies
- Forget-me-not
