The Edellieschen is a hybrid breed of an impatiens species native to New Guinea, which we like to cultivate as an ornamental plant because of its pretty leaves and numerous, colorful flowers. However, in order for the beauty of the perennial to come into its own, it needs the right location.
Which location is ideal for the Edellieschen?
Asunny location protected from the wind is ideal for the Edellieschen, as this is where it produces the most flowers. However, if it is too shady, the flowers will not bloom. But the Edellieschen should also be protected from excessively intense midday sun.
Can Edellies tolerate sun?
Basically, Noble Lieches feel right at home in bothsunnyandshadylocations. But be careful: the plants only develop theirlush flowerswhen there is enough sun; in the shade they often remain without or with only a few flowers. Therefore, prefer a sunny to semi-shady location, whereby you can plant the plants both inbedsand asunderplantingunder light trees.
Caution is also advised when themidday sun is too intense- for example on a south-facing balcony or on the windowsill - as this can lead to unsightly leaf burns.
What temperatures can noble lilies tolerate?
Edellieschen reactsensitive to draftsand to frost, which is why they arenot hardy and are usually only cultivated as annuals. Choose a sheltered location where it is not too windy or there are sudden drops in temperature. In summer, the Edellieschen tolerates high heat very well as long as it is watered sufficiently. In winter it should be kept frost-free at ten to 15 °C, but cool and bright.
Which soil does the Noble Lieschen prefer?
The Edellieschen thrives in locations withslightly moist, butpermeablesoil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH value andhigh humus contentmost comfortable. It is important that the root ball does not dry out - but the plant must not be left permanently wet either. Waterlogging is just as deadly for the Edellieschen as for most other plants. When grown in pots, the Edellieschen also places the same demands on the potting soil as it does on the soil. In fact, the Edellieschen is a perennial plant, but due to its sensitivity to frost, we usually cultivate it as an annual. However, the plant can be overwintered quite easily.
