The petunia, which is mostly cultivated as a balcony plant in this country, originally comes from South America. A carefully selected location can have an enormous impact on the growth and abundance of flowers for this plant.
Where is the best location for petunias?
The optimal location for petunias is in full sun, as they grow best during the summer flowering period. However, make sure to protect them from wind and rain, water them adequately and plant them in a well-drained substrate.
Preferred in the blazing sun
Petunias can grow in partial shade if necessary, but only a location with full sunlight will really get the plants going during the summer flowering period. The plants also need at their location:
- sufficient water
- a permeable substrate
- occasionally some care (e.g. picking off wilted flowers)
Protected from wind and rain
While hanging petunia varieties are preferably kept on the balcony or in hanging baskets (€19.00 on Amazon), upright petunias are also used for grave planting or in troughs. However, it should be noted that petunias grow better with some protection from gusts of wind and rain. Without a roof, rainy summer seasons can sometimes become a problem and promote disease in petunias.
Tip
Purchased young plants and specimens grown from seeds may only be planted outdoors in spring after the Ice Saints, as petunias are very sensitive to frost.
