Hydrangeas are generally very suitable for keeping in containers because they grow very slowly. If you plan to plant your hydrangeas in planters, here's why that's a bad idea and why you should use an alternative pot.
Can hydrangeas be planted in planters?
Planting stones are not the ideal planter for hydrangeas as they store moisture poorly and can heat up significantly in summer. Clay pots are a much better choice for water-loving hydrangeas.
Which plants are suitable for plant stones?
Planting stones are ideal for all plants that toleratedrought and warmth well. The side walls of the planting stones can heat up significantly when exposed to sunlight and are also permeable to water, and they also lack a base. They have a correspondingly difficult time storing moisture. A good choice for plant rings are, for example, Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, sage or lavender. Succulents, cushion plants and strawberries also feel at home in plant stones.
Can you plant hydrangeas in planters?
There are two decisive reasons against planting hydrangeas in planting stones:
- Since hydrangeas need a lot of water and lovemoisture, planting them in plant stones is rather unsuitable. It's too warm and too dry for them.
- If planting stones are placed directly on soil, the roots of the hydrangeas could theoretically spread deeper and absorb the necessary water from deeper layers of soil. However, the hydrangea is ashallow rooter, its roots barely reach deeper than the height of a planting stone.
Tip
These pots are better for hydrangeas
A pot made of unglazed clay (€10.00 on Amazon), which can absorb moisture and store it for a long time, is more suitable for hydrangeas than a planting stone. If you have coated pots or pots made of plastic, you should make sure that they are not dark in color. Black pots can become very hot when exposed to sunlight, causing the irrigation water to evaporate faster than the roots can absorb it. It is important for all pots that they have a drain so that no waterlogging can form in the pot.
