Begonias come from warm regions. Keep an eye on the temperature in the area around the beautiful crooked plants. Here you can find out how much cold the plant can tolerate.
What temperatures can begonias tolerate?
From temperatures below10 degrees Celsius you should think about protecting the begonias. With a few exceptions, begonias are not hardy. Before the onset of frost, bring the begonias into a cool but protected room.
When do temperatures become too cold for begonias?
Don't wait forFrost to set in before overwintering free-growing begonias. As soon as temperatures reach 10 degrees Celsius, it is time to take appropriate measures to overwinter the frost-sensitive plant from the tropics. In this case that means:
- Short shoots a few cm above the ground
- Moving plants to protected spaces
- Observe the natural resting phase of begonias
Which begonias are suitable for planting in the garden?
Ice begoniasandleaf begonias are particularly frequently used for planting gardens. In principle, however, you can keep many begonias outdoors. You should just make sure that the temperatures are not too cold for the plants and that the begonias are neither in too bright sun nor in cold wind. Choosing the right location for begonias also plays a role.
When can I put out begonias again?
Put begonias back outdoors in May after theIce Saints. This way you can avoid problems caused by late night frosts. At the end of May, the temperatures at night no longer cool down enough to cause problems for your begonias. If you have put the begonias outside, you should also fertilize the plants regularly or make sure there is a nutrient-rich substrate in the bed or balcony box of the begonias. Begonia care then takes a little more time.
Are there also hardy begonias?
With theJapanese crooked leaf and the begonia panchtharensis, you also have two hardy varieties available. These two plants come from shady forests or mountain regions and cope with cool to frosty temperatures much better than other begonia varieties. They are therefore particularly suitable if you want to plant begonias outdoors in cooler places. However, these are exceptions.
Tip
Also pay attention to humidity
Do you keep your begonia as a houseplant at a warm temperature all year round? Then you don't have to worry about frostbite. However, you should occasionally spray the plant with water from a spray bottle (€6.00 on Amazon). This is how you ensure enough humidity.
