Parsley is a demanding herb – at least when it comes to the right location. Although it wants to be very bright, it cannot tolerate direct sunlight. It then gets white spots or even shrinks completely.
Does parsley tolerate direct sun?
Parsley needs a bright location, but no direct sunlight. In the open air, the bed should be next to a shade source, on the balcony a partially shaded spot is ideal and on the window sill we recommend a distance from the glass pane or a shade source such as a bistro curtain (€14.00 on Amazon).
Growing parsley outdoors
The location of parsley plays a very important role outdoors. The soil not only has to be very permeable so that moisture doesn't build up. The bed needs a lot of light, but should not be left in direct sun for hours.
It is best to place the parsley bed next to a shade source that does not block the light from the plants.
If there is no suitable location, you can provide light shade with appropriate plants or a small fence.
Growing parsley on the balcony
Growing parsley in a box on the balcony is recommended in very sunny gardens. There you can easily move the flower box before it is placed in direct sunlight.
It's even better if you put the boxes with the parsley in a partially shaded place.
The right location on the windowsill
Many parsley fans grow their parsley on the windowsill in the kitchen or another room. It's nice and bright there, but you have to take the position of the window into account.
With south and west windows, the sun shines directly onto the parsley pots from midday onwards if they are too close to the window.
The window glass acts like a burning glass. The sun burns the parsley leaves behind the window. Therefore, place the plants further away from the glass pane or provide shade such as a bistro curtain (€14.00 on Amazon).
How to tell if your parsley has had too much sun
- Leaves hang down
- White spots on the leaves
- Parsley in the open field does not care and does not grow
- The soil or pot has dried out even though you watered.
Tips & Tricks
You should not grow parsley in the herb bed. Most herbs grow best in direct sun. The parsley wouldn't grow there. In addition, if the two-year-old plant were to be replanted, it would have to be sown in a different location anyway, as it does not get along with itself.
