When almost all the other perennials in the garden have bloomed, the sedums add autumnal color accents with their brightly colored flowers. It is all the more disappointing when the perennial literally collapses and the flower umbels lean towards the ground.
Why does the sedum fall apart?
If the perennialhas not been cut for too long, the sedums will fall apart and the plant will appear unstable. An oversupply of nutrients can also have this effect. Too much nitrogen causes stems to become too soft and tip over.
How do I prune sedum to avoid falling apart?
In the spring, shortly before the sedum sprouts, cut out theoldand woodyshootsas well as theseed heads Approach off. During the summer the sedum is then cut as follows:
- Stems that no longer have any leaves are cut back completely.
- This also applies to thin, balding shoots.
- Stems that are too tall should be shortened by one to two thirds, directly above a leaf.
What other reasons are there for the breakup?
Sedums are undemanding plants and tend toform soft shoots whenover-fertilization,especially with nitrogen. The otherwise very stable clump then falls apart and the stems bend unsightly towards the ground. In varieties with purple foliage, an oversupply of nitrogen can also be recognized by the bleaching of the thick-fleshed leaves.
Sedum planted in the garden should therefore not be fertilized at all. It is enough to provide the plants with some compost in the spring.
How can I save falling apart sedum?
In order not to influence the visually extremely attractive character of the plant, you can stickbranchesin the shape of an X into theground around the perennial. These should be about two thirds of the final height of the sedum. Compared to a stick where you tie the sedum with a string, this construction looks much more natural and beautiful.
- Also stop fertilizing.
- Dig up the plant next spring and thin the substrate with sand.
Tip
Grateful Vase Plant
Sedum lasts in the vase for several weeks. Cut the stems that are just blooming close to the ground and place them immediately in fresh water. To ensure that the bouquet lasts for a long time, it should be changed at least every two days and the vase should be cleaned at this time.
