How can I transplant a hibiscus correctly?

To successfully transplant the hibiscus, find a sunny, wind-protected location, dig a 50 cm deep and wide planting hole, cut the shoots back by a third, carefully dig up the hibiscus and place it in the new planting hole. Water, fertilizer and winter protection help with growth.

Caution sensitive

Great care must be taken when transplanting the marshmallow (rose marshmallow). Over the years, the hibiscus has developed a broad root system that is very sensitive to damage. Nevertheless, the hibiscus has a real chance of growing well in a new location.

Well prepared

Good preparation is important for the implementation to be successful. First of all, the new location must be carefully selected. You should ask the following questions:

  • Is the new location sunny and sheltered from the wind?
  • How much space does the shrub need?
  • Can the hibiscus settle here permanently?

In order to move the hibiscus, you will need some tools that you should have ready beforehand. You need:

  • Spade
  • Digging fork or rake
  • Water bucket
  • Garden or pruning shears
  • Compost or bark mulch
  • possibly wheelbarrows for transport.

Maybe you can find an active helper.

Moving step by step

  • First the new planting hole is dug. This should be around 50cm deep and at least 50cm wide so that the roots have enough space. In addition, you loosen the soil in the pit well.
  • If you haven't cut back the hibiscus this year, shorten the shoots by about a third and remove diseased, withered and shaggy branches.
  • The hibiscus will now be dug up generously. Be careful not to damage any roots if possible.
  • Carefully remove the hibiscus and carry or wheelbarrow it to the new planting site.
  • Before planting, you should water the planting hole well again.
  • Now you can carefully insert the bush and fill the hole with the excavated material. You should water the soil again and again in between.
  • Finally, you compact the soil, water the hibiscus again and cover the ground with bark mulch or compost.

For Prosperity

In order for the hibiscus to grow well, you need to water it regularly, especially when it is dry, and provide winter protection if necessary. With a little patience you can then enjoy the most beautiful flowers.

Tips & Tricks

A good time to plant hibiscus is spring. Annual pruning can take place from around the end of March and the shrub still has enough time to grow until winter.
