How can you sow leeks successfully?
To sow leeks successfully, choose either summer or autumn leek seeds, ensure humus-rich and deep soil and sow the seeds thinly at 30 centimeters apart. After germination, plant the leek plants deeper and maintain a planting distance of 15 centimeters.
Choosing the right seed
The gardener differentiates between two main varieties: summer leeks and autumn leeks. If you want to sow early in spring, choose seeds for summer leeks so that you can harvest leeks from June onwards.
The best place for sowing leeks
Summer leeks are sown under glass from January. You can sow autumn leeks outdoors from July onwards. A humus-rich, loose soil that should be deep is preferred.
Prepare the bed
Leeks need a lot of nutrients. Prepare the bed by loosening thoroughly. Mix in plenty of mature compost or manure. Keep the bed free of weeds and water the bed immediately before sowing.

Planting outdoors

If the leeks are cared for properly, the first leeks will be ready to harvest as early as June. Autumn varieties are harvested from the end of September until the onset of frost.
